Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME universal top-level domain extension is the sole TLD intended for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to book john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered 3rd-level names remained working.
